Great intentions. I look at that message and I wonder ‘how’, though.
War will occur in Iraq at this point wether the United States and other Western powers are there or not. Though without foreign interference, one can guarantee that the casualties will be limited to brown people.
Racism (or more particularly, religious intolerance) will exist in the region wether the United States is there or not. The Middle East has been steeped in anti-Jewish propaganda in ways that would make the Nazis blush. The infamous publication “Protocols of the Elders of Zion” is largely accepted at face value as non-fiction. Isreal (though generally progressive) remains riddled with folks who think that a replay of the Battle of Jericho would be a good idea (and that such a scale of genocide is morally acceptable if God ordains it).
Afghanistan was at war long before the United States went there. It has been at war for much of its history. The violence that transpires there today is a drop in the bucket compared to that which went on in Taliban times. And one would be hard-pressed to match them for discrimination.
I do not say this to justify the foreign policy of the Bush Administration. There remains no shortage of valid criticisms of the world view of President Skippy and his little junta. Clumsy, disjointed, dishonest, contrived, idiotic, selfish, self-aggrandizing, bellicose, and absolutely bungled would be a start… if one was feeling charitable, and circumstances dictated the avoidance of profanity.
But pulling one’s nose out of Iraq and Afghanistan accomplishes precisely one thing – ones own troops cease to die. Perhaps this is enough. Every day that passes in Iraq seems to suggest ever more strongly that it may even be preferable to the course of progressive failure and chaos that has been set since President Skippy commandeered USS Abraham Lincoln to declare, “Mission accomplished”.
But no war… no racism… anywhere? You have your work cut out for you kid. Sounds a little to me like when Bush said he was going to war against “terror”.
Webb (a good ol’ fashioned public health care, public education, cooperative economy, egalitarian, international aid, fair trade Canadian social-democrat).
I look at Iraq and Afghanistan this way. Would you give a man who broke into your house, raped and killed your family and broke everything, a timetable for withdrawal? Worse yet, would you trust him to fix his mess or would you just want him to get the fuck out now.
Progress can only happen when there is no more foreign intervention in the region and the Iraqis have the chance to decide their own destiny. The current sectarianism that is leading to civil war has been fostered by the US to quell the resistance to the occupation. It\’s a common imperialist tactic used since the British were the world\’s top dog.
Sure I can\’t change anything by myself, especially via blogging but the point is get people to show that our opposition is big and we need to express our opposition in great numbers to begin to build a movement.
Is there any truth to some American GIs signaling that if they die in Iraq that they desire to have their remains (ashes) dropped or spread on President Bush’s Texas ranch or personally delivered to him by a family member? I’ve heard that the thinking is, he had them killed therefore he owns them. This is being done to embarrass the president.
I haven’t heard any reports of it happening, but details like that don’t seem to filter down to Australia as our media corporations would prefer us not to hear accounts of resistance in other parts of the world, as it’d have an inspiring effect on our anti-war movement – something they dread.
Though, it wouldn’t surprise me as the anti-war movement, though quite small, is diverse in ideas and creativity to push the message to an administration so hell bent on not giving a shit about what people think.
I wonder what would happen if the Australian military personnel in Iraq started pledging to give their remains to John Howard?
I think it might cause a fuss in the media, especially if it extended to Afghanistan where Howard has sent more troops. He’s admitted that there’s an increased chance of casualties there but I still don’t think it’d have the same effect as in America where there are more deaths.
