End of 2009 in Politics: Only Gaza on my Mind
It’s so painful being at work on Christmas Eve. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve done it before. I only have like 3 hours to go or whatever, so it’s not too bad.
I’ve been reading everyone’s wrap-up blog posts and tweets over today and the last couple of days but my mind is thinking that there’s still almost a whole week until the end of 2009.
I suppose other people have more interesting lives than me because I hope I can fit in some blogging between Christmas and New Years. Though perhaps I’ll keep it lighter or something.
I did intend to write a wrap-up post for 2009 in the area of ‘radical politics’ considering this blog is about ‘writing, radical politics and popular culture and I’ve already covered writing and popular culture.
I suppose I could wrap up the issues and political events of the year, plus the demonstrations. But the main issue brought to mind at this time of year is Gaza. In a few days, it will be a year since I sat in a friend’s kitchen in Sydney and first heard that the bombs were raining down on Gaza again.
There was no end of year cheer for them then. One year on and nothing much has changed, the siege is still continuing and with settlements expanding, peace looks even further from a possibility.
I hope everyone has a good Christmas break, thank the unions for those rights to holidays but spare a thought for the people of Gaza at the same time.
