Same-Sex Marriage: 3,000 Launch National Year of Action in Melbourne
Today, around 3,000 people marched in Melbourne demanding same-sex marriage rights launching a National Year of Action to make the issue of same-sex marriage rights an election issue.
I think Family First Senator, Stephen Fielding’s comments comparing same-sex couples to incest really added to the anger and outrage toward state sanctioned homophobia in the form of discrimination based on marriage rights.
Like the August 1 rally, it was overwhelming young and angry, with chants going all through the crowd. This and the fact that people on the sides cheered us on (including straight people getting married!) shows that this issue is a real mainstream one with mass support.
This is just the beginning of the fight and from what I saw today, I think there are plenty of people willing to fight and will be in it for the long haul.
