Same-Sex Marriage: Rudd Feels Pressure from Below
Victorian Labor’s decision to pass a resolution overwhelmingly in favour of same-sex marriage is a real boost for the campaign and again proof that the tide of public opinion is shifting despite Rudd’s homophobic stubbornness.
Kevin Rudd has repeatedly refused to support legislation that would make same-sex couples equal in every part of their lives, including marriage. He’s done this in spite of the majority of people expressing support for same-sex marriage, and the ranks of the Labor party shifting to this opinion too.
It really makes a farce out of the ‘democracy’ we live in were public opinion means nothing. Public opinion is never enough for winning rights. We’ve always had to fight for them in the streets and in our workplaces, using our social power in an active way.
The resolution by Victorian Labor is yet more pressure on Rudd from below to lift the ban on same-sex marriage and should give supporters of equal rights more confidence that we can win this thing if we fight for it.
Don’t forget the Rally for Same-Sex Marriage Rights this Saturday, November 28, 1pm at the State Library. Visit equallove.info for more information and for details about rallies in other states.

I don’t understand why the religious get to use the power of government to force their beliefs on everyone else.

I think it’s because they line up with the same ideas our rulers have, religious or not.
It’s easier to justify homophobia by saying “that’s what God says” then them saying “Well, we think you shouldn’t be in relationships that don’t give birth to the next generation of workers at as little cost to us (the rich) as possible.”
