Refugees: Rudd’s Sri Lankan Solution Solves Nothing
Kevin Rudd’s continued attempts to save face over his racist stand-off against Tamil asylum seekers has become more a joke and a circus as the media continue to pedal myths and misunderstandings around the whole issue.
The pledge to extend ‘legal’ immigration from Sri Lanka will not solve a fucking thing. Working with the Sri Lankan government doesn’t change a thing because the people fleeing are fleeing that exact government, with some 300,000 Tamils locked in refugee camps.
Proof that the Sri Lankan government is a barrier to them fleeing is The Age quoting Sri Lankan ambassador Palitha Kohona who pushed the lie that they were economic refugees just seeking ‘greener pastures.’
To take this as truth is not surprising considering the Australian government fully supports Sri Lanka in their war against the Tamil minority and the Sri Lankan government of course do not want to admit the reason these people are fleeing is because they’ve been waging a genocidal war against them.
Lastly, deals to settle them quickly if they get off in Indonesia seems just so fucking pointless and a way to save Rudd’s political reputation. Why not just settle them in Australia now?
