Obituary: Chris Harman 1942-2009
I have been deeply saddened upon hearing the news that inspiring British socialist and member of the SWP, Chris Harman died on the weekend speaking at a socialist conference in Cairo.
Socialists around the world have all been shocked by this news and the British SocialistWorker.co.uk, the American SocialistWorker.org and Australian Socialist Alternative have written excellent obituaries.
Harman was a socialist of the International tradition that prided itself on opposition to Western capitalism as well as opposition to the Eastern Bloc countries posing as socialist. He’s made significant theoretical contributions to the tradition, most notably toward economic theory with books Economics of the Madhouse, Explaining the Crisis and most recently Zombie Capitalism.
Personally as a socialist, I owe a great deal to Chris for the knowledge I learnt from Explaining the Crisis, and as you might see from the my reading list to the left, I am still leaning a great deal from Zombie Capitalism. This knowledge is invaluable for socialists trying to get their heads around the concepts of our explanation for the economic crisis.
His passing is a tragic loss for the socialist movement and the highest honour we can give to him is to continue this struggle for a better world.

Amanda´s last blog ..hallo, deutschland!
Thanks Amanda, it’s come as a bit of a shock for us but it’s also a bit of a reminder that we need to become those important figures ourselves before we lose all of the ones we have.
