About Me

    Profile pic

My name's Benjamin Solah; I'm a horror writer and Marxist revolutionary living in Melbourne, Australia. I work full-time in an office but prefer to focus my attention on writing and politics. I write horror stories with a political edge - I like to portray capitalism as brutal and unjust. I'm also involved in politics as a revolutionary socialist and can frequently be found at left-wing protests including against wars, racism, attack's on worker's rights, environmental destruction, sexism and homophobia.

Absolute Write Blog Chain: Writer’s Surival Kit

November’s Absolute Write Blog Chain is going to focus on our writer’s survival kits. The things we need to write. Raven Corinn Carluk of [Insert title here] passed the chain on to me. So I’m taking time out from my novel marathon at a sprinter’s pace to list what I need.

Words and content for inspiration

Survival KitI’m beginning to see that regular reading is essential to writing. I need the words to influence me and to remind me how to construct a story.

This also means that I don’t just need any words, but also things that I’m passionate about that inspire me which keeps me reading about political events and politics in general.

Also, other mediums like music and movies as well as the news tend to help to fill this need for inspiration.

My laptop

I rarely write with pen and paper. I do so in only the most desperate times when I’m blocked. And now my enthusiasm to play with my new computer gives me motivation to write. Bringing my Mac around with me has helped me to write instead of relying on the work computer, USB keys and other things etc.

Time

I need to have the free time, time not taken up by work but also mentally free time. I need to make time and put it aside for writing. See my blog post I wrote on How I Find Time to Write.

These are the things I need to write. There are usually a heap of others things I use to assist me but they’re are not essential.

Next in the chain is Amanda Plavich.

I just looked at your progress bar and realized you’re already almost halfway done. Awesome!
I typed out a 12,000 word essay in half an hour this morning but my novel is only at 8,000 and I’ve been working on it in bits and pieces for months. Looks like I need to get to work.

I never thought about reading as a tool, but I agree with you! The more I read, the more I’m inspired! :)

Right, I can absolutely get behind the first part of your process for I completely agree with reading in order to write well. I can even understand the making time to write and freeing yourself up mentally but writing mostly on a laptop? And a MAC at that when I’m a PC purest … well that bit is difficult for me to relate to. Still, I support anything that gets another to express themselves well and you do that. Great post!
    Have a lovely weekend,

  • Time is important. You’re clearly finding some lately.

  • Amanda says:

I totally agree about reading being an essential piece. I think it’s important to know format, what works, what doesn’t work, etc. :) And we shared two things and I didn’t even realize it at the time. lol

  • David Zahir says:

Everything you said makes sense to me–although nearly all my massive notes for things end up written with pen and paper.

  • I love it that you have specified Reading on the list. You are definitely write, and I always find it surprising when writers say they don’t read much because they don’t have time for it. If it wasn’t for the love of words, most of us wouldn’t be writing.

Apart from Blogging, I’m not a writer. However I do love to blog and one thing I have found is that every time I get stuck I go back to reading blogs and I manage to get past my little hickup. I use Google alerts just for this reason because it will throw mr s bunch of blogs that are not even related to what I’m doing, but their will always be something that will stir my imagination again.

Thank you for giving the opportunity to comment.
    I wish you well

    Dear Benjamin,
Sounds like you know exactly where to go with writing, and how to make the best of those tools.
I wish you the very best with all that you are doing. :)
I’m currently not as involved in writing as I once was, as it’s taking me away from the current moment. On the bright side, am back to crafting and painting. :)
    Happy NaNoing.

  • Thanks guys for all the nice comments :)

John: 12,000 words is impressive. Keep it going! :)

Lost Wanderer: I used to forget about reading and then my writing would go down, so after a while I’ve learnt to try and remember it.

Yes, I also thinking reading is a necessity to writing. How else would we fill in the gaps of our knowledge?
