Gay Marriage: Equal Rights Taken Away in Maine
In a blow to the fight for equality around the world, homophobes have won the day in Maine on a referendum that sees gay marriage banned again in the American state. We need to come out fighting all around the world.
I’m sick and taken the day off today, and am taking break from working on my novel for NaNoWriMo to express my anger at the homophobes denying people’s right to just be equal.
There is anger around the world, particularly in America, following the referendum in Maine that sees gay marriage rights banned again. There’s anger at those who make just over the majority of the state’s population and who voted to take away people’s equal rights. There’s also anger at those who argued for the vote, who lied and used horribly divisive rhetoric to attack the rights of LGBTI people.
Homophobia and the ban on gay marriage around the world is backed up the right-wing ideologues. The business people, the government, the hard-right and the churches.
The reaction should be to come out fighting loud and proud for equal rights. We should not take this as a blow and take this as meaning we need to give up. We’re winning the battle of public opinion overall and fighting for this opinion to be heard is important.
When Prop 8 won in California, people came out in the thousands on the streets in spontaneous demonstrations. We need that again.
And in Australia, we need to turn up on Nov. 28 at our capital cities to fight for same-sex marriage rights here. See EqualLove.info for more details.

Our governmental entities here in America really baffle me. The majority of the time they don’t care what the public thinks (on a local level anyway). California really took the cake when they decided to allow gay marriage and then turned right back around and outlawed it again.
I didn’t hear about this thing in Maine. I’ll have to look it up.

It is sickening every time someone’s bigotry is allowed to take away someones rights! I hope the demo’s in protest and huge and send home the message. We will not settle for anything less than equal rights! It wasn’t a defeat in Maine, just another step along the road until we win equal rights for all! Keep up the fight, see you on the 28th in Melbourne!
