Getting Back on Track
Sometimes life gets in the way of things. And I guess it’s weird that I’ve felt so lost being away from blogging and writing and all this related stuff whilst other things took priority but hopefully I can settle down again and get back on track.
Moving office, two funerals in two cities in two days and other things has meant I’ve been behind on my writing goals. Chiefly, my plan to increase the pace of my writing has totally been derailed as this will probably be the first week in sometime where I’ve written zero words unless I pound something out tonight.
Planning for my NaNoWriMo novel has dropped off though I’m still jotting down notes and characters all of the time.
In other news, I was quoted in an ABC News article regarding the whole iSnack 2.0 thing:
Like many ABC readers, Benjamin Solah wrote in to say how much he did not want to hear about this.
“I don’t care about VEGEMITE! It’s a condiment. Why do people care???? Some people can’t afford vegemite on toast and we care about what it’s called??? Care about poverty or war or something that MATTERS!” he wrote.
I’m astounded that Obama can receive the Nobel Peace prize whilst sending more troops of Afghanistan and continuing to back Israel in its oppression of the Palestinians.
And once again, the ‘blackface’ debacle on Hey Hey It’s Saturday has made angry at all of the people whose first reaction to an act of oppression is to defend the right of the oppressor to oppress as if they were the victim, and not the people who are actually the victims of racism or other forms of discrimination.
And these people tell anti-racists to ‘get over it because it’s just a joke’ whilst the whole of Australia focuses on the real issues like the name of sandwich spread.
Hopefully I’ll be around a bit more.

Giving him the prize has made a mockery of it. I do give him props though for at least saying that he hasn’t really done anything to deserve it. Although, if I were him, I would not have accepted.
Apparently you can win the Nobel based on your intentions – not actually doing something to make the world a better place.

I have to admit that I was surprised at Obama receiving the Nobel Peace prize as well.
I once had a friend send me a sample of Vegemite and I gotta say it must be an acquired taste.
It sounds to me like Kraft is looking for some free advertising.
Good luck getting back on track with your writing!

Can a person refuse the Nobel Peace Prize without it being seen as either a snub or a promotional antic? Maybe Obama chose correctly in accepting it, because there would have been an equal amount of commentary delivered if he refused it. I’m torn on the question because there have been so many poor recipients of prizes lately that awards have been devalued.
And the prize tag that comes with the award is too sweet to ignore, right? (he did get the million bucks, didn’t he?) Either way, the prize is irrelevant when you consider that people are still dying in conflicts around the globe, and any number of awards isn’t gonna stop the bloodshed.
Damn, I’m not meant to be getting in to political commentary. Look what you’ve made me do here…

I don’t have any comments about vegemite or nobel peace prizes.
Just wanted to say that you were missed by #fridayflash. This will be my first year for NaNoWriMo, so I will wish us both luck!

John: See, I don’t even think Obama intends to make peace, let alone act on it. Sending more troops to foreign country kind of excludes you from any claims to being peaceful I think.
Carol: Free advertising indeed. The media totally just played into Kraft’s hand and blew up this story to sell their own bloody papers too. I have a post about the media at the moment boiling under the surface.
BigWords: I totally agree with you. I mean Nixon got it!
Laura: Thanks
I’ve really been meaning to get back to Friday Flash in October. Let’s see how I go this Friday.
I must be living under a rock! What the hell was going on with vegemite??
And I can’t say I’m too impressed with Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize. As someone above said – it devalues the award and makes a total sham of it.
I have to admit to giving the news a miss in the most part – especially commerical stations – because I’m feed up with what passes as “news”. I remember the Chaser boys years ago dubbing it “newstainment” and they aren’t far wrong.

The new vegemite was going to be called iSnack 2.0 and everyone thought the world was coming to an end. Bloggers who’ve remained silent about poverty, war, and a whole swathe of issues suddenly thought it important to come out against a real issue, the name of the new vegemite.
I agree with the newstainment thing. The media has become even worse this past year, I’m sure.
