My name's Benjamin Solah; I'm a horror writer and Marxist revolutionary living in Melbourne, Australia. I work full-time in an office but prefer to focus my attention on writing and politics. I write horror stories with a political edge - I like to portray capitalism as brutal and unjust. I'm also involved in politics as a revolutionary socialist and can frequently be found at left-wing protests including against wars, racism, attack's on worker's rights, environmental destruction, sexism and homophobia.

Movie Review: Sweeny Todd

The tried and tested combination of Tim Burton and Johnny Depp make this adaptation of the famous musical, Sweeny Todd a delight to watch. Movie Musicals can sometimes be jarring but but the whole aesthetic of the movie is smooth and fitting.

Sweeny ToddSweeny Todd is based around Benjamin Barker, a barber who lost his wife to a judge, that renames himself Sweeny Todd and opens a new barber shop with the pie-maker downstairs, Mrs. Lovett that turns into quite a sinister venture in the effort to attract the judge into the shop where he’ll get much more than a close shave.

The attraction to Tim Burton movies is of course, the aesthetic of the whole thing. The almost characterised imagery, particularly with the bright blood, fits well with the dark and humorous feel of the whole movie. It’s first of all, a visually stunning movie that keeps you staring in wonder the whole time.

Tsk! You didn’t mention the singing! ;-)

I loved this movie! Can’t wait to see Johnny as the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland and as Barnabas Collins in Dark Shadows.

  • He wasn’t a bad singer at all, quite good actually.

Can’t wait to see Alice either! But haven’t heard of this Dark Shadows film.
