About Me

    Profile pic

My name's Benjamin Solah; I'm a horror writer and Marxist revolutionary living in Melbourne, Australia. I work full-time in an office but prefer to focus my attention on writing and politics. I write horror stories with a political edge - I like to portray capitalism as brutal and unjust. I'm also involved in politics as a revolutionary socialist and can frequently be found at left-wing protests including against wars, racism, attack's on worker's rights, environmental destruction, sexism and homophobia.

5 Years of Benjamin Solah’s Blog

On July 4, 2004 – 5 Years Ago, I sat down on my parent’s computer back in the South-West of Sydney to begin this blog where I said, “This will contain reviews on cds, movies, books, sites etc, plus my thoughs on politics and various issues.”

The quality of the blogging varied, but I enjoyed finding a space to rant about politics and updating people on my writing progress. And I certainly learnt a lot along the way, progressing from short paragraphs full of typos to thought out posts, to now – which I hope people see as of some quality.

I thought I’d take a trip down memory lane (or memory fibre optic connection?) and offer some screen shots of past blog designs.

Blog1

I began using blogger.com with the url, writingcorner.blogspot.com and used this simple old-style type template. I wasn’t that savvy with code and described myself at the time as a human rights activist rather than a socialist, where my posts consisted of lots of rants against Howard’s policy of Mandatory Detention of Asylum Seekers, and for a while my progress on the first incarnation of my novel Hadeon.

Blog2

Later when I’d become more confident editing the theme in blogger, I had a go at wowing my readership with this bright and bold header. I fell in love with Verdana font, poignant quotes from writers and people like Ghandi and Voltaire.

Blog3

The big move was moving the blog and the Geocities site to benjaminsolah.com. I got one of my sisters to take a photo of me sitting under a fig tree near our house and thought I looked very “writerly.” This was the original header for the blog using the Connections theme but over the years I changed to various headers including the more recent one of me sitting in bed with my laptop, and all the books scattered everywhere.

I’m quite proud of my ability to keep this blog going. It’s become a bit of an obsession, which is surprising considering my inability to finish a novel. I seem to have consistently kept up with blogging, bar the second half of 2007 after moving out of home, where I was a bit obsessed with other things.

I hope that I can continue with this as I’m still having so much fun.
